PPF vs ceramic coating
PPF is a film that takes the hit. A ceramic coating is a hard layer that makes paint easier to clean. They do different jobs.
| PPF | Ceramic coating | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Clear urethane film | Liquid coating that bonds to the clear coat |
| Stops rock chips | Yes | No |
| Light scratches | Self-healing topcoat on most films | Resists light marring, does not heal |
| Makes washing easier | Somewhat | Yes, water and dirt slide off |
| Can be removed | Yes | Wears off or is polished off |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
You do not have to pick one. Many owners put PPF on the front of the car, where the chips happen, and coat the rest of the paint. A coating can also go on top of PPF.
Which one should you pick?
If rock chips are the worry, get PPF. If you want gloss and easier washing, get a coating. For both, do PPF on the front and coat the whole car.
